Is the Sun Good for Your Hair? Damage, Growth and Season
Is the sun good for your hair? For the hair you can see, no — sunlight has no way to improve it and several ways to damage it. For the follicle underneath, the sun is largely irrelevant: it sits below the skin, shaded by the hair growing out of it. Almost every claim in either direction confuses those two things.
What is genuinely interesting is that hair growth is seasonal, measurably so — just not in the direction most people assume.

That is the whole answer in outline. The sections below give the mechanism and the numbers.
What UV Actually Does to Hair
The pigment in your hair is a sunscreen. Melanin sitting in the cortex absorbs and filters UV radiation, which partly protects the proteins around it — but the pigment is degraded and bleached in the process. That is the trade: your hair protects itself by sacrificing its colour.
There is a structural catch. Melanin is only in the cortex, while the cuticle — the outer scales — sits on top of it and takes the highest intensity of radiation with no pigment to shield it. So the outer layer is the most vulnerable part. Sun exposure alters amino acids in the cuticle, and the outer layers rupture and detach.
The two halves of UV do different jobs, and this holds regardless of hair type:

This matters practically: the sun does not simply lighten hair as a cosmetic bonus. The lightening is the visible half of a process whose other half is structural. Hair that has been bleached by a summer is also weaker than it was in May, and because the shaft is dead it cannot repair itself — see why hair feels like straw.
Does Sunlight Make Hair Grow?
Not directly — but hair growth is seasonal, and there is a proper measurement of it. Fourteen healthy men aged 18 to 39 with indoor jobs in Sheffield were assessed every 28 days for 18 months. The findings are specific enough to be worth a table.

Read the first two rows together and the popular claim collapses. If sunlight drove scalp hair growth, the growing phase would peak in midsummer. It peaks in March, and the scalp is at its worst in September, at the end of the sunniest months. Beard growth does track the light — up 60% by July — which is probably where the folk belief comes from, but your beard is not your scalp.
So: your hair does not grow faster because you sat in the sun. It grows at about 0.35 mm a day, roughly a centimetre a month, all year round, and no amount of sunlight changes that rate.
Why You Shed More at the End of Summer
This is the single most useful thing on this page. A normal scalp sheds around 100 hairs a day, and in the study above the seasonal swing took shedding to roughly 60 a day in late summer against under 30 the previous winter — a doubling, in healthy young men, with nothing wrong.
Every year, people notice more hair in the shower in September and conclude something has gone wrong. Usually nothing has. The follicles that entered the resting phase over the summer are releasing their hairs on schedule. It settles by itself.

The Vitamin D Question
Sunlight’s only real route to your follicles is vitamin D, and the evidence there is narrower than the supplement aisle implies. A published review found vitamin D levels significantly lower in alopecia areata — a mean difference of about 8.5 ng/dL — and considers supplementation reasonable where deficiency is documented. For female pattern hair loss and telogen effluvium the data is contradictory.
Two things follow. Deliberately sunbathing to grow hair is not supported by any of that; if you are deficient, a blood test and correction is the route, not exposure. What Sun-Damaged Hair Looks Like
- Lighter at the ends than at the roots, with a brassy or reddish cast — UVA at work on the pigment.
- Rough, dull, straw-like texture, worst on the lengths and ends because they have been exposed longest.
- Split ends and mid-shaft breakage — the protein loss half of the damage.
- Faded or shifted colour if your hair is dyed. Coloured hair fades faster in the sun than virgin hair.
- A tender or peeling scalp along the parting, which is sunburn on skin, not hair damage — and skin that burns repeatedly deserves proper attention.
How to Protect Hair from the Sun
Nothing undoes photodamage, so protection is the whole strategy. In rough order of how much they actually help:
- Cover it. A hat is the only measure that blocks UV outright. Everything else reduces exposure at the margins.
- Protect the parting. Your scalp burns where the hair separates, and the parting is the one place skin is fully exposed.
- Rinse and wet hair before swimming. Hair saturated with clean water absorbs less pool or sea water, and salt and chlorine amplify UV damage.
- Rinse again afterwards, then condition on the lengths. Reducing friction is the practical defence for an already-weakened cuticle — see how often to condition your hair.
- Use a leave-in on the ends before long exposure. A film on the shaft is not sunscreen, but it does reduce the mechanical damage that follows.
- Do not comb or brush hair while it is wet and hot. That is when it is weakest.
- Postpone chemical work. Bleaching or colouring in the middle of a sun-heavy month stacks two forms of damage on the same cuticle.
Products marketed as UV protection for hair are not regulated like sunscreen and carry no SPF you can verify. Treat them as a marginal extra on top of a hat, not a substitute for one.
Sun, Chlorine and Coloured Hair
Chemically treated hair starts the summer with a lifted, incompletely closed cuticle, so it takes UV damage faster and loses colour sooner. If you colour your hair and spend the summer outdoors, the two effects compound: the dye fades, the underlying hair lightens unevenly, and the shaft weakens.
Chlorinated water and repeated sea bathing belong in the same paragraph. Both are named among the chemical causes of acquired hair shaft fragility, alongside prolonged UV exposure — and in a published case, a young swimmer’s hair recovered fully within six months simply by removing those exposures.
Sun After a Hair Transplant
Different rules entirely, and they are not negotiable. Our schedule is no direct sunlight for two weeks and no sunbed for one month, and hats are restricted for the first month, which leaves shade and timing as your tools. Recipient skin in the early weeks is thin, inflamed and easily burned, and excessive sun damage is listed among the factors associated with poor graft growth.
