After Hair Transplant Care
- As the effects of anesthesia will continue for a while after the procedure, be careful not to bump your head. Even the slightest contact can damage or dislodge the transplanted hair follicles. Do not panic if this happens—contact your patient representative.
- Fluids injected into the treated area may cause mild swelling on your face. This is completely normal and usually resolves on its own within 3–4 days. To reduce swelling, avoid bending your head forward, standing for long periods, and sleeping face down.
- Be sure to use the pillow protection pads provided at the hotel. Some of the fluids injected into your scalp may leak onto the pillow (the color may be yellow or slightly red). This is normal; do not worry.
- A bandage will be applied to your donor area after the procedure. The next day you will be taken to the Hair of Istanbul clinic for a check-up and dressing. Our nurses will change your dressing and carry out the necessary checks. Please have breakfast beforehand and be ready in the hotel lobby at the time specified by your patient representative.
- If you are traveling back on the second day, the Hair of Istanbul team will provide detailed instructions on how to wash your hair and then take you to the airport.
- If your return is on the third day, your first hair wash will be performed by the Hair of Istanbul team on the morning of day three.
General Healing and Protection Period
For a fast recovery and the best results, you must follow the instructions below:
- Do not expose your head to water or chemicals during the first 3 days.
- Sleep on your back. Your head should be elevated at a 30–45-degree angle and must not rub against the pillow. (The bandaged nape area may touch the pillow.)
- Do not touch the transplanted area at all during the first 72 hours after the procedure.
- Avoid sexual activity for the first 7 days.
- Do not consume alcohol (including beer) during the course of antibiotic treatment and for at least 1 week.
- Reduce smoking as much as possible—ideally quit for at least 2 weeks.
Washing Process
Wash your hair for 10 days exactly as instructed using the special care products provided.
During washing:
- Use lukewarm water; do not apply direct high-pressure water.
- Foam the shampoo in your hands and apply it to the recipient area gently; do not rub.
- Do not use a towel for drying; let the water drip off on its own or blot gently with soft touches.
- After the 9th wash, you will be additionally instructed on how to remove the scabs. (You can access it from the Scab Removal Video Link)
- After the final wash, please send photos of your hair so we can make sure all scabs have been cleaned properly.
Washing after a hair transplant is one of the most important steps for healthy results.
The scabbing period typically completes by day 10. After this time, the transplanted follicles are securely anchored.
Points to Note in the First Months
- Do not use head-contact accessories such as hats, beanies, or helmets for 1 month.
- Do not shave the donor area for 1 month and the recipient area for 3 months.
- Avoid heavy sports, weightlifting, excessive sweating, and activities like sauna for 1 month.
- Wait at least 2 weeks before swimming in the sea or pool.
- Avoid direct sunlight for 1 month.
- Do not go to the sauna, steam bath, or Turkish bath (hamam) for at least 5 months.
- Wait at least 8 months before hair dye, chemical treatments, or blow-drying/styling with heat.
These time frames are necessary for the grafts to fully strengthen and for the skin’s natural barrier to re-form.
Situations You May Observe in the First Months
- After Hair Transplant Shock shedding: In weeks 2–8 after the operation, some of the transplanted hairs may fall out. This is completely normal; the follicles remain intact under the skin and begin producing new hairs from months 3–4.
- After Hair Transplant Itching and sensitivity: You may feel mild itching in the recipient area. Do not scratch with your nails or pick off scabs. From day 10 onward, you may touch gently with your fingertips.
- After Hair Transplant Swelling: Mild facial edema may occur in the first 3–4 days; sleeping with your head elevated and drinking plenty of water helps reduce this.
After Hair Transplant Hair Regrowth Timeline
- Months 3–4 after Hair Transplant: New hairs begin to emerge. (20–30%)
- Month 6 after Hair Transplant: Density becomes noticeable; hairs thicken.
- Month 12 after Hair Transplant: Most of the results are achieved.
- Month 18 after Hair Transplant: The final appearance develops, especially for vertex (crown) transplants.
After Hair Transplant Long-Term Recommendations
