Hair Whorl
A hair whorl is the point from which scalp hair spirals outward, formed before birth and fixed for life. It sets the direction of the surrounding hair, most often at the crown, and it is the feature that makes crown restoration a question of direction rather than density.
A whorl is the point hair spirals out from. It forms before birth, when follicles set their angle in the developing skin, and it fixes the direction of every hair around it for life. Most people have one, at or near the crown; some have two, and a whorl can also sit off-centre or at the frontal hairline, where it is usually called a cowlick.

It is a direction feature, not a density feature. Hair at a whorl is no thinner than elsewhere. It looks sparse because the shafts point away from each other and expose the scalp between them, which is also why the crown is the first place most people notice loss — the parting is built in.
Reproducing one is the hardest part of crown work. Every recipient site in that field points somewhere slightly different, and a graft aimed wrongly crosses its neighbours instead of lying with them. A double whorl doubles that problem, since two radiating fields must meet along a seam that looks deliberate.
The direction cannot be changed by styling or by surgery — it can only be followed.
